Solid walnut timber board: what is it?

Walnut is a hardwood species. If you treat the wood well, it will last for years. Walnut has a grey-brown to red-brown colour that discolours over time when exposed to daylight. A beautiful dark or black grain pattern is also present on the sheet material. The wire can vary between straight, tangled and wavy, which gives the wood a special structure. It is also known as walnut wood. This board material is one of the popular wood species in our country and has a warm appearance which is often used in furniture and interior construction. Mainly for making furniture and parquet. Walnut is quite stable when it comes to warping and shrinking, but still be careful in rooms with medium to high humidity and temperature differences. A Walnut sheet is also called a Walnut furniture board or timber board, although it is not finished at the sheet edges as standard.

The solid walnut boards in our range are of high quality. This can be deduced from the visual grading. The visual grading is indicated by letters, often a combination of two letters with a separator between them. This can be found in the product name or the product properties. The first letter represents the top of the sheet, the second for the bottom or backside. A/B thus describes the top and bottom of the sheet. A is the best visual grading.

American walnut has an entirely different look than European walnut; for instance, the wood is a lot darker and there are fewer colour differences. American walnut is a fairly smooth wood species with few imperfections.

Lumber Quality Indication
A Uniform colour. No knots and no heartwood allowed.
B Small colour nuances permitted. Tassels and heartwood may be present.
C Large colour nuances permissible. Tassels and heartwood are present.

Read here more about the quality of timberboards.

These solid boards are composed of three layers which are glued together crosswise. The two top layers are of high quality. The 5 mm thick top layers consist of falling wide sections of approx. 80 to 140 mm. The 10 mm thick core makes it a sturdy and stable whole. The core consists of the same wood as the top layers. In the core, all remaining material is processed that is not suitable for the visible sides: too short and too narrow wood, sapwood and other defects. The whole trunk is used, leaving almost no residual waste. Due to the 3-layer structure, this type of board is the most stable of all solid glued boards.

The direction of the wood grain

Timber board has a visible wood grain. The wood grain pattern always runs in the longitudinal direction. When sawing the sheet, we maintain that the longitudinal dimension is also the longitudinal direction of the wood grain. So be careful when filling in the measurements, so that the flames of the wood grain all run in the right direction!

Available thicknesses of solid walnut timber board

Solid timber boards can be ordered in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thickness(es) are available: .

Machining solid walnut timber board

Walnut is easy to machine. First sand the sheet with a fine grain (at least 180) so that the original colour of the wood appears. It can be sawn and milled just fine, there are no additional instructions for this other than that your material has to be properly sharp for an optimal result. Pre-drilling is recommended, but not required. Use stainless steel instead of iron when bonding with metal to prevent discolouration of the wood.

Because it is a softer wood species, and is sensitive to discolouration, so we recommend finishing this wood type well. Finish the sheet with lacquer, varnish, stain or oil to properly bring out the natural look. It also reduces the risk of warping and shrinking. Read all processing instructions of timber board here.

Specific applications of solid walnut timber board

Walnut can be used to make furniture such as dressers or cabinets. Walnut can also be used as furniture, such as tables and chairs. Keep in mind that walnut is a softer hardwood species. This makes it easy to machine, but also more sensitive and less impact resistant.

In addition to sawing the material to size with millimetre accuracy, you can also choose from a variety of shapes and finishes. For example, if you have a round dining table in mind, choose the 'circle' shape, or opt for a rectangle with rounded corners. See the available shapes and finishes that apply to the product or see all the possibilities on the shapes or finishes page.
